"ANCESTOR/EDWARD’S AQUIFER”
When I am gone
When my nucleotides unhinge
And the last bond breaks
In my bones
These atoms remain
That rushed in clear water
Over limestone
Down hillsides and over the tongue
Across the vein
That joins stone to stone
Land made flesh made land
The first ancestor and the last
“Red Dirt Lover”
Let me hold you in my arms, in a prairie river city.
Where the waters run unclear, where there is no convincing.
The holy keep a high place, but ain’t no mountains on this prairie.
No house upon a hill, no sky dreams left to bury.
But a western breath to warm you, and a flatland soul to wander.
This heart to hang your hat in, if home’s forever yonder.
